7.5 lbs of Forta Ferro
Forta Ferro Macro fibers were used at 7.5 lbs per cubic yard in lieu of the traditional rebar grid. The Macro fibers provide a 3 dimensional reinforcement system throughout the concrete slab. Forta Ferro’s acid resistance shines through as a great benefit in this application. The project team also supplied a concrete mix that used both Type 1 Portland cement and fly ash with 1.5’’ rock to minimize the concrete shrinkage potential. Only 4 days after the slab was placed the precast bunker walls were delivered. Although violating all recommendations, both the loaded delivery trucks and setting crane were on the newly placed slab. The crane operator commented, “I’m surprised this slab hasn’t already cracked with all this load on it.”
A visit to the project in August 2013 confirmed that the mix and fiber combination are serving the application and its function very well. Similar mixzes with this 7.5 lb fiber dosage rate have been used very successfully in expanded control joints and joint free slabs throughout the world since 1999.
